- First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden are joining forces with a few Marines (and other servicemembers) to help increase hiring and support of veterans. She appeared at my old haunt at MCB Camp LeJeune in Jacksonville, NC (shout out to Jimmy, Spud and the boys...see you at Fast Freddy's!) to big-up military families:
The White House spouses are calling on businesses, nonprofits and communities to help military families challenged by frequent moves and the emotional strain of having loved ones far away, facing wartime peril.
The White House said companies and groups already have signed on to the effort. For example, Best Buy's Geek Squad will help military families use technology to connect with loved ones who are deployed. Sears and Wal-Mart will offer transfers to employees who are military spouses who have to move and the national PTA will expand efforts to help military children adjust to new schools.
"The initiative aims to education, challenge and spark action from all sectors of society to ensure military families have the support they deserve," a White House statement said.
- The civil war in Libya continued to produce stalemate as rebel and government forces continued to exchange territory. The rebels are reported to be receiving fresh arms from...somewhere. The government and its leader remain ensconced in Tripoli. NATO leaders are continuing to reject rebel calls for ground troops, but are deadlocked on what to do next.
- Severe weather gripped the South and CNN is estimating as many as 40 people have been killed.
- The Times Magazine has a fantastic article on Robert Lustig and sugar:
The viral success of his lecture, though, has little to do with Lustig?s impressive credentials and far more with the persuasive case he makes that sugar is a ?toxin? or a ?poison,? terms he uses together 13 times through the course of the lecture, in addition to the five references to sugar as merely ?evil.? And by ?sugar,? Lustig means not only the white granulated stuff that we put in coffee and sprinkle on cereal ? technically known as sucrose ? but also high-fructose corn syrup, which has already become without Lustig?s help what he calls ?the most demonized additive known to man.?
- Patent applications have recovered in Europe:
"After a two-year slump, the EU and U.S. are nearly back to their levels of patenting before the crisis," said Benoit Battistelli, a 60-year-old French lawyer who is the EPO's president. "This, combined with a massive rise in patent applications from Asia, led by China, has made 2010 a record year at the EPO."
...The top three companies are European. Germany's Siemens AG, with 2,135 patent filings, and BASF AG, with 1,707, are first and third; Philips NV, with 1,765, is second.
- I can think of many things I wish New York City could foist on America, but Donald Trump isn't one of them. He is undoubtedly the worst builder in New York, erecting some of the most hideous architecture I've ever seen. No shock...he was a huge hit with the Tea Party:
The crowd of 2,500 to 3,000 roared approval when he talked about giving Obama the signature line from his reality TV show: "You're fired."
- This week's classic movie recommendation is High Noon (1952) starring Gary Cooper and the one and only Grace Kelly. Stop here and let that sentence stew in your mind. Gary Cooper. Grace Kelly. In perhaps what the greatest western of all time, Cooper is a Marshall who has turned in deference to his wife's pacifist Quaker beliefs. But when he learns a hardened criminal is coming to town on the noon train...well..lets say he's got some figurin' to do. Directed by Fred Zimmerman, this is a fantastic movie all around. If you've seen it before, see it again.
